A power failure at Television Centre caused outages for WestStar cable customers today (Wednesday, 16 May). WestStar's headend is located in the main plant at Television Centre which lost both it's main power and back-up power around 11:30 a.m. Engineers worked alongside Corporate Electric to get services back up as quickly as possible once power was restored. The outage also caused WestStar to lose internet and phone service for a short period this afternoon. All services were restored by around 1:30 p.m.

Walking the path to employment

Record numbers of young people are graduating from Cayman’s high schools and pursuing further education. Yet many say it’s hard to find a job.

Cayman 27′s Kevin Morales went to the Chamber of Commerce Career Expo on Friday to talk to them about getting jobs and how an event like that can help.

There will come a day when it will be those children who have wealth and special privelege, who will be able to get a job. The 90% will be considered outcast of society. Most of them will have to leave Cayman in order to find a new life. It appears that this is about to happen in our lifetime.

This island needs a complete overhaul in the schools first. Not failing kids who do not meet the standards for thier grade level is appauling. It's amazing how everyone is out screaming and complaining when dart wants to build a beach over wb rd, or the new dock and all it's issues. But when it comes to educating children for many come from single parents or even worse neglectful parents, there is minimal assisstance to stop this path for the student. I have tried hiring children from John Gray H.S. more then I can count, they came to work late and that was when they showed up at all. Spelling and Grammar were appauling, and that was when I could even read their penmenship. I have not given up, for if i can help just one out of twenty, but it is very frustrating when these same kids want an entry level postion and think 10.00 with benefits is not enough and quit after a couple of weeks or better first paycheck.

@concerned While that may be true there are some who are well qualified, who have completed their studies at Universities overseas who return to nothing; while there are people here on permits doing jobs that these graduates are qualified to do. Furthermore, almost all the jobs that are advertised in the newspaper, everyone knows that they are renewals; and those in charge do nothing because they benefit from such renewals. I conclude that money take precedence over all things on this Island. There is no program that protects graduates, they suffer because they don't have 15 years work experience!
  4. Young Qualifed Caymanian
@Please thanks or posting that, because I really think that the people of these islands forget that there are people like us still out there struggling to find a decent job without the x number of years experience they are asking for! I have my Masters degree with a 4.0 GPA, and it so difficult for me to get a job in Education. Can you believe it? You hear this one and that one in government saying they need Caymanian teachers or in the education system, that's all lie!!! I can attest to that. I have emails to prove everything. While I was in school, I have asked the government for internships in education, they told me they don't have anything for me. I even would have worked for free just to get the experience but no! I tried again when I graduated with my Masters degree, and they would not even give me an assistant teacher position! Can you imagine!? Cayman, please wake up and fight for the young qualified caymanians out there who are struggling! We want to give back to our country that is why we are here, and those who had government scholarships we are required to return home, yet we can barely find a job in our field of study. This is craziness!!! There are more foreigners here than there are caymanians...and there is nothing wrong with them being here...BUT there should be NO reason why any qualified caymanian should be unemployed or struggling in a career outside of their field (being that there are jobs in their field on island). This should NOT be happening... I want to do my Doctoral degree, but it don't make sense sometimes because I'm struggling with a Masters I do not want to know what it would be like with a Doctorate.. HELP!!!!
