Tropical Depression 7 will reach the Windward Islands Saturday afternoon and evening possibly strengthening to a tropical storm (“Gordon” is next Atlantic name).
Gusty winds and showers to pick up Saturday, and showers will likely persist into Sunday. That said, increasing wind shear is expected to rip apart the system by late Sunday or Monday in the eastern Caribbean.
It’s Cayman’s first line of defence against hurricanes, and during the early hours of Friday (17 May), the Doppler Weather System went online. Built in East End at a cost of more $4m, with cash provided by the European Union, the radar will give early warning of the strength and size as hurricanes approach.
