Turtle Farm bites back

Cayman Turtle Farm has hit back at claims by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) over the ┬áthe facility’s announcement they are reducing the price of meat. While the farm accepts that dropping the price will increase the amount sold, they say it’s “a logical conclusion” that by reducing costs will reduce poaching, something agreed by the Department of Environment.

WSPA wants a study to determine the full scale of demand for meat here in Cayman, but the farm says its sales figures show an increase in people buying meat.

Answering calls by the UK-based charity not to sell to visiting tourists, the farm says: “Denying visitors the opportunity to taste farmed green sea turtle meat in Cayman would be akin to denying visitors the opportunity to taste farmed north American bison meat in Montana.”
