Cayman’s agriculture industry takes centre stage for one day each year — at the Agriculture Fair. The 2012 edition begins at 7 a.m. Wednesday at The Grounds, in Lower Valley.

But for farmers like Errol Watler, the Agriculture Fair is more than a one-day event.

“The goal for me… we’re trying to improve our product,” Watler says. “We’re trying to get the restaurants and supermarkets buying our produce.”

He says the better home-grown crops, the more economically independent Cayman can be.

Cayman 27′s Janelle Muttoo has the story.

A major project Government wants to get going is facing mounting opposition.

The Coalition to Keep Bodden Town Dump Free is taking signs of its position to the streets, literally.

Lawn signs like these have been popping up over the district in recent days, with property owners supporting the cause. The Coalition has also set up a website outlining its opposition to plans to create a landfill in midland acres as part of Government’s partnership with DART.

Crews are clearing the way for the Esterley Tibbetts Highway to connect to Batabano Road. These are crews hired by DART Enterprises for temporary projects over the next two months.

This week they began moving trees in the DART-owned nursery, in West Bay. A DART spokesperson tells us this is to clear the area in preparation for construction of the road, which eventually will be opened up from Raleigh Quay to Batabano Road. The spokesperson adds that work on that part of the highway isn’t coming for some time.

Human resource managers today got a close view of how changes at the Immigration Department can help their businesses. Immigration online is the latest tool designed to provide more information to employers as they need it.

Software developers say it’s a powerful, functional tool that can be used efficiently to manage a company’s immigration needs.

Immigration officials hope this is the first step to create a full virtual online immigration centre.

The system does not accept online payments but that’s expected to be possible as a more comprehensive system comes on stream in the future.

Government says no to increased taxes on cruise ship visitors.

This as negotiations continue with China Harbour Engineering Company to build a new port.

“We did not want to charge, have any increase in terms of head tax because in our opinion it would mitigate or reduce our competitiveness,” says George Town MLA Ellio Soloman.

Meantime Government seeks a profit sharing deal with C.H.E.C. It wants in on some of the moneyChinaHarbourwill earn from renting retail space during its proposed 49-year lease period.

Government is also looking at partnering with C.H.E.C. to own retail space on the dock, in which Caymanians could own shares.

Both of those points are still being negotiated.

Mr. Solomon expects the project to generate between 1,200-1,500 Caymanian jobs. Local contractors are slated develop all structures on the upland part of the dock.

“China Harbour will only be allowed to bring on those persons in managerial or supervisory positions and in some instances, technical services,” Soloman says.

He estimates that to be 300 Chinese workers at the most.

He also says plans for housing include those workers to rent from local property owners as a way to boost Cayman’s real estate market. He also says all building materials will be ordered through local retailers.

Mr. Soloman spoke with Cayman 27’s Kevin Morales today.

A family moves beyond its grief to help those who helped it during its time of need.

Cayman Hospice Care got a donation of just over $2,500. It comes from the family of William Astor Ebanks, who passed away at 82 years earlier this month.

The family describes the dedication of Hospice Care’s staff to Mr. Ebanks’ needs as remarkable. Mr. Ebanks says she hopes more people give to Cayman Hospice Care, so that they can continue to provide the services that were so appreciated by her family and late father.
