Year 4 St Ignatius students got that opportunity today as part of their Social Studies curriculum. Among the places they ventured to was Pedro St James. Although their focus of the day was about shelter, they also learned quite a bit about the islands’ history.

It’s still not clear how much money will have to be spent to repair damage to George Town Police Station as a result of last Wednesday’s fire.

A police spokesperson says assessments of the costs are still being undertaken. The building was evacuated and shutdown as a result of the blaze which originated in the holding cells area of the station. Full operations resumed this week.

A teenage prisoner and ten police officers were hospitalised due to smoke inhalation. The officers were released the next day. Police now confirm that the injured prisoner has been discharged from hospital after several days of care.

He is remanded to Eagle House in connection with a separate matter.

They were trained by a team of 14 from Customs and the Agriculture and Tourism ministries.

Taking top honours after the 4-weeks of training was Jordan Ebanks.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service says the investigation into last month’s Scotiabank robbery remains very much active.

But detectives are appealing for anyone with information about the crime to step forward. The Scotiabank branch on Cardinall Avenue in George Town was held up just before mid-day on April 26th.

Robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, but not before being spotted by a visiting tourist couple, who snapped pictures of the unfolding drama.

A dark Honda car used as the getaway vehicle was abandoned in the area of George Town known as the swamp. It was recovered the same day by police.

Detectives say anyone with information that could help crack the case should contact the George Town Police Station on 949-4222 the RCIPS tip line 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers on 800-TIPS (8477).

The chairman of the Cayman Islands Stock Exchange jumps to the country’s defence after a scathing attack in the New York Times.

Former Manhattan District Attorney, Robert Morgenthau, slammed Cayman and other off-shore financial jurisdictions like Bermuda in an opinion piece.

He wrote, “The secrecy laws in these tax havens are at the root of serious crimes: fraud, money laundering and international terrorism…follow the trail of nearly any major financial scandal and you will enter one or more of these notorious jurisdictions.”

But in a letter to the paper, Anthony Travers hit back, calling the allegations “The purest nonsense.”

He points out that since 1990, the U.S. Justice Department has had full access to any account in Cayman in relation to all crimes and money laundering efforts and the same has been extended to the Internal Revenue Service.
