TOP STORY: Dixon NOT GUILTY
Posted Wed, Oct 7th 2009, 20:17(Grand Cayman - CITN) -
A jury finds Deputy Police Commissioner, Rudolph Dixon, NOT GUILTY on both charges against him.
The jury began deliberating around 1 p.m. today [7 October 2009] and just 3-hours later came back with a unanimous verdict.
The case against Rudolph Dixon was the result of operation Tempura into police corruption. Mr. Dixon faced two charges, one of misconduct in office and another of doing an act tending and intending to pervert the course of justice.
The Crown tried to prove Mr. Dixon intentionally ordered an officer to release a former senior officer who was arrested for DUI from custody.
The Defence on the other hand said Dixon was simply giving the officer advice when he told him what he would do if he was in the same position, referring to keeping a former colleague in custody. But Dixon says he told no one to release the former officer.
The case against Mr. Dixon was based on allegations of an incident from 5-years ago. He is the final officer to face charges relating to Tempura. The team has failed to secure a single conviction in its multi-million dollar investigation.
Justice Henderson was wrongly arrested and received a payout of $1.8 million. Former Police Commissioner, Stuart Kernohan, was cleared and is seeking damages. Former Police Inspector, Burmon Scott, was also cleared and is seeking damages. Chief Inspector, John Jones, has been cleared and is now back at work. Former Cayman Net News reporter, Lyndon Martin, was cleared, but says he will not sue. And now, Rudolph Dixon too, has been found not guilty. Meanwhile, the Tempura spinoff investigation, Operation CEALT continues.
