The RCIPS admits its fuel card management was not as tight as it should have been.
An audit shows government abuse of fuel cards amounted to half a million dollars in just one year, and the RCIPS was one of the big offenders.
The report found 141 ex-police officers continued to use their cards after they left the force. One of those ex-officers made 156 transactions in just one-month. That's an average of five times a day.
Those transactions were made a full year after the officer left the force. In a statement, the RCIPS tells News 27 they were already looking into their fuel policy before the audit came out.
A police spokesperson says, “It's clear that management of the cards was not as stringent as it could have been.” Police also tell News 27 the new procedures include the withdrawal and cancellation of extra fuel cards, and auditing specific mileage and fuel use of every police vehicle.
