Test results confirm three Cayman residents were infected with dengue fever early this year.

The three were hospitalized in January with acute viral illness, and CAREC results just in show they were all suffering Type 2 dengue fever.

Health officials believe local mosquitoes infected them. The mosquitoes probably picked up the virus after biting visitors from abroad who were already infected.

Dengue fever is passed on to humans by Aedes Aegyptii mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water. The Department of Health says anti-mosquito measures are continuing, but it's also urging people to clear out any containers where rainwater can collect and provide a breeding ground for the mosquitoes.

Health officials say the 3 dengue victims all recovered by late January and there are no more suspected cases at present.
