WSPA lobbies gov’t over Turtle Farm

The chief executive of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is now lobbying the new government over the Turtle Farm.

Mike Baker of the WSPA has met with Minister of Environment Hon. Wayne Panton and other senior politicians following an investigation by the animal charity into conditions at the West Bay tourist facility.

Mr. Baker says he was pleased with the communications, and will monitor the situation in the hope conditions at the Farm improve.

“We have no intention of trying to destroy Caymanian traditions,” he said.

“Government has made it very clear that the farm will be there, providing turtle meat for local consumption. What we are concerned about is what type of farm, and what type of future can that farm have.”

Mr. Baker says he visited the farm and claims just a few token improvements have been made.
